H2020-RISE-PEARL workshop in St. Petersburg

April 29, 2019

The Workshop "Periodically Bent Crystals for Crystalline Undulators" was held within the framework of the Horizon2020-RISE PEARL project in Saint Petersburg, Russia during April 26-27, 2019. The scientific talks delivered were devoted to reporting the results achieved within the project. A scientific program of the meeting can be found here.

Prof. Andrey Solov’yov (MBN Research Center) gave a talk overviewing the state-of-the-art theoretical and computational achievements towards using oriented crystals as novel light sources in the extreme sub-angstrom wavelength range. Prof. Andrei Korol (MBN Research Center) presented the results of a detailed analysis of the parameters of the light sources based on periodically bent silicon and diamond crystals.

Dr. Werner Lauth (University of Mainz) gave a summary talk on the results of the implemented and the aims of ongoing channeling experiments with straight, bent and periodically bent crystals at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. Prof. Hartmut Backe (University of Mainz) provided a revisited review of the analytical approach to the description of the channeling phenomenon based on the Fokker-Planck approximation.

Prof. Vincenzo Guidi (INFN, Ferrara, Italy) presented the results and the relevant analysis of the data obtained in the experiments on the axial channeling of negative projectiles. Dr. Andrea Mazzolari (INFN, Ferrara, Italy) spoke on recent achievements in designing, manufacturing and characterization of bent silicon and germanium crystals. Mr. Alexander Pavlov (Peter the Great Polytechnic University, Saint Petersburg) reported the results on channeling and radiation by electrons and positrons in straight and periodically bent diamond (110) crystals obtained via numerical simulation of the processes by means of MBN Explorer. Dr. Pablo de Vera (MBN Research Center) presented an overview of the capacities of the MBN Explorer and MBN Studio software in application to simulation of radiation effects in various materials.

On the first day of the workshop, the Management Committee meeting was held, devoted to the discussion of the project management and dissemination/outreach activities. During the round table discussion held on the second day, future activities within the project were discussed as well as the perspectives of further collaborative work in the field of crystal-based light sources.
